fall boot trends + my must-haves

It’s boot season! One of my favorite seasons. Who doesn’t love to throw on a pair of booties with a cozy sweater?? This year, it’s all about the chunky boots. Think thick soles, lace ups, platform styled boots. The three you’ll continue to see into Winter are the lug boot, the combat boot and the hiker boot. All three are similar in style but have different features that create different looks. Here are my thoughts & tips on each.

  1. Lug boots

The lug sole boot is a seasonal trend and one I think someone at any age can rock. Just because the lug sole is chunky doesn’t mean it has to be heavy or unflattering. I’ve picked some of my favorites below, you’ll notice some have a zipper detail which can elongate the leg and others are a sleek leather and very SIMPLE meaning they go with everything (denim, leggings or even a dress!) The lug sole doesn’t have to feel grunge, if you prefer a classic look try something like the Sam Edelman boot that has both black and brown detail to allow you to wear with so many colors. If you like an edgier look, try the March Fisher zipper boot with a lower shaft that is perfect for rocking leather leggings and an oversized sweater. The easiest way to rock the lug sole is to pair with a slim legging or dark denim and roomy top or coat. This will balance the thicker sole and your body will look proportionate.

  2. Combat boots

Combat boots were big last season and they haven’t gone away! This year, I love that I am seeing so many taupe and beige options. Beige and neutral color combat boots are everywhere including from designers like Prada and The Row. The best thing about these boots are they are so comfortable – you can walk in them all day! If you don’t have a pair, I would start with a black leather as it’s something you can wear with just about anything. One of my favorite styles I am seeing more and more is a two-tone knit/leather combination combat boot. It’s not only ultra-flattering, but super comfortable on the ankle. This year I invested in a pair of Fendi boots because I loved the black and brown knit style and find that they are a great alternative to my black and silver hardware combat boots.

  3. Hiker boots

Another big trend this fall is the hiker boot. Similar to the lug sole boot and combat boot but with a bit of an “outdoorsy" twist. In fact, you’ll see a lot of outdoor styles this season like puffer vests and anorak jackets as well! I love this trend because it’s one that also goes into winter, some of my favorite winter boots are a hiker boot style with a faux fur detail (the Marc Fisher boots are the BEST and a staple for me, currently on sale!) I love the these Rag and Bone tan boots because they are slim and a great option if you aren’t sure if you like a chunky sole. I am also loving the light grey Marc Fisher boots, such a unique color and great with fall/winter whites.

I love adding a trendy boot to my closet each season but it’s important to also have your go-to’s. Here is a starter list of what you should have in your closet already:

  1. Leather ankle flat boots

  2. Suede sock booties

  3. Black over-the-knee boots

  4. Cognac leather mid-calf boots

  5. Neutral low-heel boots

  6. A colored boot in burgundy or olive
